< Previous주암칼럼 Resources Recycling Vol. 34, No. 4, 2025108 1968년 만리포 가는 길 야산에서, 왼쪽부터 오정탁, 이지향, 이지원, 오영아 ｢ 처음 지리산 등산을 시도한 것은 1967 년 7 월 하순으로 기억된다 . 이상희 서울대학교 교수 , 한정인 금속 ‧ 연료종합연구 소 연구원 , 필자 , 그리고 가이드 겸 포터 , 이렇게 일행 4 명이 노고단에서 1 박을 하였다 . 당시만 하여도 가이드 없이 지리산 을 등산하는 것은 위험하였다 . 또 천막 등 짐도 많았다 . 노고단에서 맨 먼저 치러야 할 행사는 군인에게 신고하고 모든 짐 을 점검받아야 했다 . 일제 강점기 선교사들이 여름 휴식처로 노고단에 돌집을 짓고 마을을 형성하고 있었다 . 6·25 때 폭격 으로 집들이 대파되었지만 , 군인들은 그 집들에 주둔하고 있었다 . 배낭을 점검하는 과정에 약간의 음식물을 군인들에게 제공해야만 했다 . 노고단에는 서울대학교 농대 연습림 산장이 한 채 있었다 . 일제 강점기 지리산이 일본 교토제국대학 ( 京都帝國大學 ) 농 학부 연습림이었고 , 그때 지은 산장을 서울대학교에서 인수한 것으로 추측된다 . 다행히 우리 일행은 이 산장에서 1 박을 할 수 있었다 . 지리산이 국립공원으로 지정되기 전이라 ( 이해 12 월 말 국립공원 제 1 호로 지리산이 지정되었다 ) 지리산에는 산 장 ( 대피소 ) 이 아무 데도 없었다 . 기록에 의하면 함태식 씨가 1971 년 노고단 산장의 처음 지킴이로 입산한 것으로 되어 있 다 . 이튿날 우리는 가이드를 따라 지리산 완벽종주를 목표로 노고단을 출발하였다 . 길은 ( 등산로 ) 희미하게 나 있었지만 , 안 내판은 없었다 . 얼마나 걸었는지 , 앞으로 얼마 남았는지 , 알 수가 없었다 . 특히 삼거리에서는 방향이 헷갈렸다 . 다행히 건 장한 가이드가 샘이 있는 곳 , 지명 , 쉬는 장소 등 세심하게 안내하였다 . 가이드 없이는 정말 산행이 어려웠다 . 노고단 → 임 걸령 → 토끼봉 → 연하천 → 형제봉 → 벽소령 , 이렇게 약 14km 의 지리산 능선을 종주하여 저녁 무렵에 벽소령에 도착하 였다 . 지리산 천왕봉까지는 11km 를 남기고 있었다 . 우리는 벽소령에서 야영을 결정하고 천막을 첬다 . 천막 주위에 명반을 뿌렸다 . 뱀이 침입하는 것을 막기 위해서이다 . 밥 을 짓고 , 고기를 굽고 , 즐겁게 술을 마셨다 . 그런데 갑자기 비가 오고 바람이 불기 시작한다 . 천막 안으로 들어가 식사가 계 속되었다 . 그러나 천막이 흔들리기 시작하더니 , 천막이 날아갈 것 같다 . 비가 뿌리고 강풍이 그치질 않는다 . 우리 네 사람 은 천막 , 네 귀퉁이를 필사적으로 붙들어야만 했다 . 오랜 시간 이 강풍과의 싸움이 계속되는 동안에도 소주는 끊임없이 조 금씩 마셨다 . 술 없이는 추위와 강풍과의 싸움을 견디기 힘들었다 . 이때처럼 술을 고맙게 느껴본 일이 없다 . 만일에 천막이 바람에 날아갔다고 생각해보자 무서웠다 . 이 악몽 같은 밤이 지나 아침이 밝아왔다 . 바람은 잠잠해졌지만 , 비는 조금씩 계 속 뿌리고 있다 .주암칼럼 109 자원리싸이클링 제 34 권 제 4 호 , 2025 천왕봉까지의 완벽한 지리산 종주를 포기하고 미천 은정마 을 쪽으로 하산하고 말았다 . 초기의 목적이 실패해 허탈한 심정 으로 하산을 재촉하였다 . 그런데 어제 무심코 지나왔지만 , 아니 일부러 외면했지만 , 충격적인 장면이 뇌리에서 사라지지 않는 다 . 50 여 년이 지난 지금도 그곳 광경이 눈에 또렷하게 그려지 고 , 연민과 전율을 느끼게 한다 . 토끼봉과 연하천의 중간지점으로 기억된다 . 불에 타 까맣게 그슬린 고사목이 서 있는 길가 언덕이었다 . 비바람에 파여진 흙 더미 속에 2 구의 유골이 노출되어 있었다 . 틀림없이 빨치산의 유골일 것이다 . 여수 사건이 발발한 1948 년부터 빨치산의 활동 이 미미해진 1954 년까지의 7 년간 지리산은 사실상 전쟁터였었 다 . 한때는 2 만 명의 빨치산이 지리산에서 활동하였다는 기록 이 있다 . 그러니 노출되지 않은 유골은 얼마나 많을 것인가 . 어 느 지리산 지도에는 유골이 노출된 이곳을 ‘ 운봉무덤 ’ 으로 지 명을 붙이고 있다 . 나는 후일 정충제 저 , ｢ 실록 정순덕 ( 상 , 중 , 하 , 도서출판 대제 학 , 1989 년 ) ｣ 을 읽었다 . 정순덕 (1933 ∼ 2004) 은 산청군 삼정면 내원리 출신이다 . 1950 년 결혼 직후 , 빨치산의 강요에 식량을 지고 지리산에 들어간 남편을 찾아 1951 년 입산하였다 . 그리고 1963 년 11 월 그의 고향마을 뒷산에서 생포되었다 . 소위 그녀는 지리산 마지막 빨치산이었다 . 내가 이상희 교수와 같이 처음 지리산 등산을 시도한 것은 마지막 빨치산이 생포된 지 , 15 년 간의 지리산 비극이 종식된 지 , 불과 4 년 후였다 . ｣ 젊은 사람이 읽으면 혹 참고가 될까 싶어 등산기를 좀 길게 적었네 . 꿈같은 이야기들이야 . 이 시기 우리는 급우 임태섭 ( 林泰燮 ) 군과 셋이 잘 어울렸어 . 때마침 일본 아저씨가 서울에서 ‘ 피어리스 ’ 라는 화장품 회 사를 경영하고 있었고 거기에서 임태섭 군이 일하고 있었지 . 그래서 저녁때가 되면 셋이 그곳에서 만나 , 술집을 찾아다녔 네 . 한번은 셋이 아저씨 단골 요정에 가 , 거나하게 술에 취해있을 때 몇 분의 손님과 같이 아저씨가 오셨어 . 우리는 당황하 여 곧 자리를 떴지만 그때의 어색한 자네 표정은 일품이었어 . 또 하나 기억에서 지울 수 없는 술타령 이야기가 있네 . 내 처 남 황선두 군이 고려대학교 경제학과를 졸업하고 대학원에 적을 두고 있으면서 취직자리를 찾고 있었어 . 장인어른으로부 터 부탁도 받았지 . 처남을 취직시켜준다는 명분으로 장인어른께 운동자금조로 목돈을 받았지 . 이 돈으로 셋이서 흥청망청 은 아니지만 , 술집에서 기염을 토하는 날이 이어졌네 . 돈은 떨어지고 길은 찾을 수 없고 그래서 박태서 선배에게 눌러붙었어 . 박 선배는 당시 이병철 사장 비서실장 자리에 있 었고 , 우리 중학교 1 년 선배이며 , 임태섭 군의 외사촌 형이기도 하였지 . 우리 셋이 심심찮게 돈화문 근처의 박 선배 집에 가 , 냉장고를 뒤져서 술단지를 찾아 밤늦게까지 도사리고 앉아 술을 마셨네 . 주인이 집에 있든 없든 관계없이 술을 마신 거 야 . 박 선배가 귀찮아서 조처했는지 알 수 없지만 , 처남 황선두는 제일모직에 입사하였네 . 그리고 삼성전기 사장 , 석유 화 학계의 회장을 역임하고 삼성맨으로 일생을 보냈네 . ◎ 학문 세계와 사회참여 불광동에서 몇 년 안 살고 자네는 수유동으로 이사를 했지 . 지금도 그 집은 지원이 남매 이름으로 남아있네 . 이렇게 해 서 우리는 불광동 시절의 막을 내렸네 . 그 시절은 왜 그렇게 술타령을 했었나 , 외로워서 그랬는가 , 술이 외로움을 달래주었 어느 날 북산에서 필자(좌)와 이상희(우)주암칼럼 Resources Recycling Vol. 34, No. 4, 2025110 는가 , 만용인가 , 30 대의 패기인가 , 어린 아들 정탁이가 ‘ 아버지는 왜 항상 술에 취해있어 .’ 하던 소리가 지금도 내 귀에 남 아있네 . 1960 년대 후반은 우리의 30 대 후반이기도 하지 . 그 무렵 자네는 서울대학교 신문대학원 교수를 거쳐 사회과학대학 신 문학과 교수가 되었고 , 1994 년 정년퇴임을 했네 . 나는 연세대학교 공과대학 금속공학과 교수가 되어 자네와 같은 해 정년 퇴임을 했지 . 이 26 ∼ 27 년간은 학문 세계에 빠져 , 자주 만나지는 못했지만 , 춘추로 모였던 중학교 동기동창회에는 자네를 만나는 재미로 늘 참석했지 . 인사동 사천옥 ( 이모집 ) 이었어 . 공학도인 내가 자네의 학문 세계를 어떻게 알겠는가 . 자네의 애제자 김남석 박사 ( 경남대학교 신문방송학과 교수 ) 가 2013 년에 ‘ 이상희 평전 - 커뮤니케이션 연구 , 사회과학과 비판 -’, 그리고 2020 년에 역시 김남석 박사가 쓴 ‘ 이상희의 시대 - 언론학 탐구의 정신 : 이론화에 대한 갈망과 비판주의의 실천 -’ 이 두 논문을 두 번쯤 읽었을 거야 . 그렇다고 자네의 학문 세 계를 이해한 것은 아니야 . 자네의 학문 세계는 모르지만 , 자네의 학문 세계 주변 세분의 교수님은 알고 있네 . 유재천 교수 , 조명한 교수 , 김채윤 교수 세 분이야 . 1969 년 봄 점심시간 신촌 로터리 어느 식당에서 서강대학교 유재천 교수를 우연히 만났지 . 그런데 내 수필을 실은 ‘ 연 세춘추 ’ 를 들고 있으면서 내 글이 좋았다고 이야기를 하는 게 아닌가 . 그래서 기억에 남아있지 . 서울대학교 심리학과 조명 한 교수는 자네와 같이 지리산 등반을 했어 . 그런데 지금은 기억에 남아있는 것이 아무것도 없어 . 서울대학교 대학원 원장 인 사회학과 김채윤 교수는 두 번쯤 만났는데 , 이러는 거야 . 우리 다 아는 처지 아닌가 . 말 놓고 하세 . 정말 허물없는 호걸이 고 대인 ( 大人 ) 이었어 . 서부 경남의 명문가 집안을 훤히 꿰뚫고 있고 , 묫자리까지도 알고 있어 얼마나 놀랐는지 모른다네 . 자네의 학문 세계에서 딱 하나 집고 넘어가야 할 이야기가 있네 . 자네는 그 흔한 석사학위 , 박사학위를 외면한 거야 . 대 학교수로서는 마땅히 가졌어야 할 학위를 초월하고 자네만의 외길을 걸은 거야 . 그 많은 논문을 발표하고도 학위에는 무 관심했지 . 그 고고 ( 孤高 ) 한 자네의 성품이 , 예술가다운 개성과 고집이 쉽게 변할 수야 없겠지 . 연세대학교에서 만난 명성 높은 한문학자인 이가원 교수와 역시 명성 높은 시인 박두진 교수 생각이 나네 . 만나서 직접 대화한 일은 없었지만 멀리서 보고서도 몸에 배어 있는 높은 학풍을 느꼈어 . 그 어른들은 학위는 고사하고 학력도 안 가지 신 것으로 알고 있어 . 자네도 그 어른들과 비슷한 철학을 가진 것 같이 보였네 . 서울대학교를 정년퇴직 할 무렵부터 자네는 사회참여의 길에 들어서고 활동이 왕성하였어 . 내가 아는 것만 한번 적어볼까 . 1980년대 후반 동창회 스냅(사천옥에서), 시계방향으로 정의석, 허정한, 정종환, 배영현, 오한로, 이상희, 사진찍느라 필자 자리는 비었음.주암칼럼 111 자원리싸이클링 제 34 권 제 4 호 , 2025 • 서울대학교 교수협의회장 (1991 ∼ 1993) • 방송문화진흥회 이사 (1991 ∼ 1997) • 상지대학교 재단 이사장 (1995 ∼ 1999) •KBS 이사 (1996 ∼ 1999) • 한성대학교 재단 이사장 (2001 ∼ 2003) • 참여 연대 공동대표 (2002 ∼ 2003) • 방송문화진흥회 이사장 (2003 ∼ 2006) • 방송위원회 위원장 (2006) 자네의 인품과 정치이념이 이 자리를 만들어 주었겠지만 , 일반 교수는 도저히 추종할 수 없는 일이지 . 김영삼 , 김대중 , 노무현의 문민정부 3 대에 걸친 11 년간의 이상희 교수 작품 아닌가 . 뭐니 뭐니 해도 자네 감투의 하이라이트는 방송위원회 의 위원장이겠지 . 건강이 좋지 않아 중도하차 하였지만 . 나한테만 이야기하는 것이라면서 , 청와대 안방에서 노무현 대통 령과 겸상으로 밥을 먹었다는 둥 , 또 방송위원장 아래에 3 명의 차관급이 있다는 둥 , 은근히 자랑한 기억이 나네 . 나한테 말 고는 함부로 자랑할 자네가 아니지 . 이렇게 바쁘게 생활하면서 , 여름방학이 되면 서울에 거주하고 있는 함안이씨의 젊은이 ( 중고생과 대학생 ) 를 인솔하여 관광버스에 태워 2 박 3 일 일정으로 함안이씨의 본고장 고성 ( 固城 ) 으로 간 기억이 나네 . 함안이씨의 유적지 탐방과 자네의 강의 등으로 함안이씨 종친회에 대한 봉사는 각별하였지 . 특히 ‘ 선비의 집안 함안이씨 ’ 등 자네가 쓴 글도 담긴 강의 교재 를 보고는 깜짝 놀랐네 . A4 크기 40 쪽 분량의 매 우 정열적인 교재였어 . 이 교재를 보고 있으니 우리 세대의 정신세계를 지배하고 있는 근본은 유교임을 부인할 수 없네 . 건강이 좋지 않아 2006 년 방송위원장직을 사 퇴하고 집에서 정양하면서 자네는 일주일에 하 루를 내가 일하고 있는 역삼동 사무실에 왔네 . 아마 10 시경일 거야 . 오자마자 바로 바둑을 두 었네 . 점심시간을 제외하고는 오후 4 시경까지 바둑 삼매경이었지 . 두 마리를 놓아야 제격인데 꼭 흑백을 고집했지 . 아마 1 년은 계속되었을 거 야 . 부인의 속도 태운 것으로 아네 . 우리의 삶은 바둑으로 마무리가 된 것 같네 2010 년 7 월 8 일 늦은 밤 , 지원이로부터 전화 를 받았네 . 급히 서울대학교 병원 응급실로 달려 갔지 . 그때 자네 의식이 희미하고 숨소리가 약했 어 . 9 일 새벽 자네 혼자 외로이 눈을 감았네 . 마 누라와 아들 부부 , 딸 , 그리고 친구가 지켜보는 가운데 눈을 감았으면 했는데 그러지 못하여 아 쉬움이 많네 . 나는 자네가 10 년만 더 살았으면 하는 욕심이지만 , 100 년 후에 볼 때 10, 20 년이 무슨 큰 의미가 있는가 . 함안이씨 젊은이들에게 강의한 이상희 교수가 작성한 강의 교재주암칼럼 Resources Recycling Vol. 34, No. 4, 2025112 자네 형님과 누님이 일찍 세상을 떴다는 이야기는 앞에서 했지 . 부모님도 40 대 , 조부님도 40 대에 세상을 뜨셨지 . 여러 명예를 짊어지고 , 만 81 세까지 산 자네는 부모님에게 큰 효도를 한 거야 . 거기다가 지원이 , 주현이 분신까지 건재하니 , 효 도의 곱절이라고 할 수 있어 . 지리산 천왕봉이 직통으로 잘 보이는 산청 원지의 산봉우리에서 따뜻한 햇볕을 쬐면서 누워있는 자네 부부를 생각하면서 . * 이 글을 쓰는데 , 이지원 교수 ( 한림대 ) 로부터 가족 관련해 여러 자료를 받았음을 부기하고 고마움을 표함 . (2025. 7. 13. 기 )113 자원리싸이클링 제 34 권 제 4 호 , 2025 INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS RESOURCES RECYCLING (Enacted in August 1992, most recently revised in June 2016) Guide for Authors Resources Recycling is a bimonthly journal comprehensively covering all aspects of the processing for the recovery of valuables from various secondary resources. Therefore, the journal aims at publishing high quality research as well as review articles including waste management professionals in academia, engineering, government, and industry. The authors are encouraged to submit original research contributions that have novelty and potential industrial significance. The manuscript which reports practical scope and applicability in the area of recycling processes, and new theoretical concepts verified by experimental details will be encouraged to submit. The journal publishes contributions such as, research paper, technical note, technological review, letter or communication, note, and comments. Ethical Issues All authors are required to comply fully with current ethical standards for publication in their disciplines as follows; (1)The manuscript should be original, not having been published previously. (2)A research paper published at a conference or in un-registered literature should be improved and completed to be considered as an original paper. (3)Author should submit an Author's Checklist. Sub- mission of the Author's Checklist is considered to denote agreement with the research and publication ethics defined by the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling. (4)Authors should provide detailed information about the paper to the editor and confirm any ethical issues pertaining to the reproduction of a previously published paper. Subsequent Actions : If the results of investigation prove there was no research misconduct, the Institute shall conduct appropriate subsequent action to restore the honor of the researcher. If the results prove there was research mis- conduct, the Institute shall publicize the results and may conduct the following subsequent actions based on the resolution of the committee according to the gravity of the misconduct. ① Request the cancellation or modification of research results ② Cancel the publication of research results (send the official documents to relevant institutions to cancel existing publication) ③ Withdraw the membership of or expel the researcher ④ Notify the presidents of affiliated institutions ⑤ Report to the law institute Copyright Authors transfer the copyright of their article to The Korean Institute of Resources Recycling on signing the Copyright Transfer Form, which will be sent to the corresponding author. Type of Manuscript Review Paper: Review Papers review important areas of recycling in order to inform the general reader of the background, state of art, and outstanding research results. Authors who has a plan to submit a ‘Journal Review’ are recommended to contact the editor. Research Paper: Original findings pertaining to the scope of the journal will be published after peer review. Full-length research papers describe important new experimental or theoretical results. Submitted manuscripts will be peer reviewed by three reviewers who are assigned by the Editor. Short Communication: Short communications are short reports which convey the essence of a new experimental or a theoretical concept, present new experimental data, Resources Recycling Vol. 34, No. 4, 2025114 elaborate on a previous journal article, etc. A short paper describes briefly a piece of work which is not comprehensive enough to make it submit as a full article. Nomenclature, units, and references must conform to those for ‘Research Paper’. Discussion: Discussion may be submitted on any subject of interest to the journal readership. Discussion commenting on previously published articles will normally be sent to the authors of the previously publication for possible response prior to publication. Review Process All manuscript are peer-reviewed by three reviewers assigned by the Editor. Based on the review results, a manuscript may be accepted without change, recommended for modification with or without further reviews, or rejected. Acceptance for publication depends on the author's responses to the reviewers' comments. Authors should prepare a manuscript in accordance with the format given below. PREPARATION of MANUSCRIPTS Submission of an manuscript implies that the work reported in the manuscript has never been published. Manuscript should be written in Korean or English, and be typed in at most 30 double-spaced pages on one side of 210×279 mm including figures and tables. The format for full-length research paper is described below Title and Authors: Title of the paper, the name of the author, and the affiliation. The full name of the author should be written on the manuscript. Example) Kil Dong Hong, Kil-Dong Hong, Kildong Hong. Abstract and Key Words: The abstract should be written in both Korean and English, and state the objectives and present conclusions in no more than 450 characters in Korean (150 words in English). It should be concise giving scope and purpose, methods or procedures, significant new results, and conclusions. Five or less key words in Korean and English should be given for subject index. Body: Each author may choose the article structure suited to the manuscript containing introduction, experimental, results, discussions, conclusions, etc. Writing should be concise, eliminate details that are not essential to the development and are readily available in previously published papers, or accessible reports. Text should be sectionalized by inserting appropriate headings. Unit: SI system should be used for all dimensional quantities. Acknowledgement: Acknowledgement section is placed at the end of body. It could cite financial support and information. Nomenclature: Symbols used in the text or equations should be collected and identified in a table of nomenclature with definitions and dimensions near the end of the manuscript prior to the references section. Roman symbols should be listed alphabetically in the table first, then Greek symbols. The symbols should be those commonly used in material and mineral engineering. References: References cited in the text should be listed in a numerical order. Citation of references should be made sequentially, in the form 1,2) or 3-6). One reference number should correspond to one reference. A reference is described in the order: names of authors, published year: the title of article, the abbreviated name of the journal, volume number (issue number), page. Figures: Each figure should be numbered. Drawings and charts should be carefully made with black-and-white photo- graphic prints or high-quality laser prints. It should be of sufficient size so that after photo reduction to a single column width (6.5 cm) or two column width (13 cm) the smallest letter will be 1.5 mm. Tables should be numbered by the order of mention in the text. Equations: All equations should be numbered in Arabic numerals. SUBMISSION The article should be submitted by the member of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling and a corresponding author should be appointed in the case of more than two authors. The type of article should be marked on the cover of the manuscript. Four hard copies of the manuscript should be sent to the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling . The editorial board could reject the following paper which fail to obey the guide for authors which had been set up by the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling , and do not have clear text and figures, and describe subjects irrelvant of the scope of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling . Submission confirmation will be informed to the corres- ponding author as soon as a manuscript is arrived to the editorial office. When authors do not receive such confirmation from the editorial office, authors are encouraged to contact the editorial office. By submitting a manuscript, it is implicitly agreed that authors agree with the transfer of the copyright for their manuscript to the publisher once the manuscript is accepted for publication. Authors should submit their revised manuscript within 3 months after they are required by the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling editors. If authors don’t submit the revised manuscript, the article will be ‘rejected’.
